BIOGRAPHY

Roman Lytwyniw is a British/Ukrainian violinist whose compelling, sensitive musicianship is distinguished by a desire to explore the connection between performer, instrument and listener driven by the question, ‘What can the violin communicate?’

In 2018 Roman formed and led Ensemble7 on an international tour with guitarist Miloš Karadaglič, establishing himself as a strong and empathetic leader performing for the BBC and ClassicFM in Cadogan Hall, Snape Maltings, Dubai Opera House, and Aix-en-Provence. Since then, he has been regularly invited to perform in the role of Co-Leader with the Royal Northern Sinfonia, Manchester Camerata and United Strings of Europe, as well as leading the Jess Gillam Ensemble on tour.

Roman gave the U.K. premiere of Steven Gerber’s ‘Three Songs Without Words’ for the London Sinfonietta and performed Vivaldi’s ‘Four Seasons’ with United Strings of Europe. Now building his profile as a solo musician, Roman’s roots are as a passionate chamber musician who has regularly performed in festivals such as Budleigh, Southwell, North Norfolk Chamber Music, Resonances, Schiermonikoogs and Whittington.

After studying at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester, Roman completed his bachelor’s at the Royal Academy of Music with Mateja Marinkovic and So-Ock Kim. He has also worked with members of the Doric Quartet, London Haydn String Quartet, Lawrence Power, Ning Feng, Anthony Marwood, Philippe Graffin, Kolja Blacher, Kathryn Stott and Sophia Rahman.

In 2023, Roman was chosen to be the only violinist on the International Artist Diploma at RNCM and made his debut with the BBC Philharmonic in June, playing Glière’s Violin Concerto. He has since released an improvised EP ‘Quay 5 Sessions’ with cellist Robert Wheatley and will be recording his debut CD in early 2026.
